June 1, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
EL PASO, Texas (June 1, 2015) - Right-hander Carlos Pimentel tossed a gem and Iowa's offense came alive for the third straight night as the Iowa Cubs (26-24) jumped all over the El Paso Chihuahuas (25-26) 14-4 in Pacific Coast League action Monday night at Southwest University Park.
The win ties Iowa's high water mark for the year, the second time this season the Cubs have been two games above .500. The victory also gave Iowa a series win, winning the final three games after dropping game one against the Chihuahuas on Friday.
All nine players in the I-Cubs starting lineup registered a hit, the second time that has happened this season. Iowa also notched exactly 15 hits for the third straight night, and have tied a season-high with a three-game winning streak.
Iowa got to Chihuahuas starter Zack Segovia (1-1) for a run in the second inning when Christian Villanueva hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season.
The Cubs erupted for a big inning in the fifth, scoring five more runs off Segovia. After an RBI-double by Pimentel and an RBI-single from Adron Chambers, Matt Szczur put an exclamation mark on the frame with a three-run home run, his fourth of the season. It was Szczur's second three-run homer in the last five games. It was also the second time Iowa has scored at least five runs in an inning in the series.
The Cubs scored three more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh before exploding again for four runs in the eighth, highlighted by Villanueva's two-RBI triple.
Pimentel (3-3) shutout El Paso on six hits and a walk over 7.0 innings, his longest outing of the season. It also ties a career-high for Pimentel for innings pitched. He struck out five.
Segovia allowed nine runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.0 innings to suffer the loss for El Paso. He struck out six. The Chihuahuas resorted to sending infielder Mike McCoy to the mound in the top of the ninth inning. McCoy tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Left-hander Daniel Schlereth made things interesting in the later innings, allowing four runs, one earned, in 1.2 innings in relief of Pimentel. El Paso notched a run in the eighth inning when Melvin Upton Jr. scored on a wild pitch. Schlereth also forced in three Chihuahua runs in the ninth when he walked Upton, hit Brett Wallace, and then walked Cody Decker, all with the bases loaded.
Righty Blake Cooper took over for Schlereth with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth and got McCoy to groundout to end the game.
Villanueva paced Iowa with three RBI, three runs scored, and finished a single short of the cycle. Szczur had three RBI. Chambers and Rubi Silva each drove in a pair. In total, five I-Cubs had multi-hit nights.
Upton led El Paso with two hits, and RBI, a run scored and a walk. Jake Goebbert and Ramiro Pena each had two-hit games.
The I-Cubs will now head to Albuquerque for a four-game set with the Isotopes, Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. First pitch is set for 8:05 p.m. CT at Isotopes Park. Right-hander Donn Roach (5-0, 2.18) is scheduled to start for Iowa. The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com. The On-Deck Circle Pre-game Show will begin 7:40 p.m. CT.
