Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds swept the visiting Salt Lake Bees in a doubleheader on Monday night at AutoZone Park, tossing a 2-0 shutout in the opener and winning 8-2 in the twinbill finale.
With the sweep, the Redbirds (26-26) have now won three in a row and return to .500 for first time since starting the year 3-3. It was Memphis' first doubleheader sweep since taking both games of a doubleheader from Round Rock at the Dell Diamond on August 3, 2014.
Outfielder Stephen Piscotty recorded two hits in each game to extend his season-best hitting streak to nine games. Third baseman Jacob Wilson went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Redbirds to a win in the nightcap.
In the opener, Tyler Lyons fired a three-hit, seven-inning complete-game shutout as Memphis blanked the Salt Lake, 2-0.
Lyons (4-2) threw only 74 pitches (52 for strikes) while extending his Redbirds franchise record of seven career complete games. The left-hander allowed three hits, struck out four, and walked none to lower his ERA to 2.98.
Memphis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Xavier Scruggs opened with a walk, moved to third on a Greg Garcia double, and scored as Alex Mejia grounded out to second.
Two frames later, the club tacked on an insurance run after Jacob Wilson was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a flair by Travis Tartamella.
Wilson's home run and four RBI led the Redbirds to an 8-2 win over Salt Lake in game two of Monday's doubleheader.
The Redbirds sent nine to the plate for a 5-0 lead in the first inning as Salt Lake starter Steven Hensley was unable to retire any of the first seven Redbirds. The score quickly moved to 3-0 after a Piscotty double and Dan Johnson two-run home run. The club later tacked on its final two runs on a Wilson RBI single and Ty Kelly sacrifice fly.
The two clubs traded runs in the third inning, beginning with a Alex Yarbrough RBI single. Wilson answered with a line drive solo homer into the Redbirds bullpen, his third of the season.
Wilson capped off the evening with a two-run single in the fourth inning.
The Redbirds continue their homestand on Tuesday by welcoming the Las Vegas 51s to Memphis for a four-game series. Left-hander Tim Cooney (4-2, 3.00) will man the bump on Tuesday's 7:05 pm CT series opener against Las Vegas 51s Matthew Bowman (2-6, 6.85).
