Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers early struggles led to a 9-3 series-opening loss to the Iowa Cubs in front of a sell-out crowd of 7,403 at Cheney Stadium on Friday night.

The trouble started for Tacoma after the Cubs pieced together a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Leadoff batter Brett Jackson put Iowa on top with a home run and outfielder Lou Montanez scored on a sacrifice fly hit by DJ LeMahieu five batters later.

Things got messier for the Rainiers through the next two innings as the Cubs scored a combined six runs on six hits over the second and third. Montanez highlighted the second with a two-run home run and a pair of errors cleared the way for three more runs to score in the third.

Second baseman Matt Tuiasosopo committed a throwing error on a force out attempt to plate one I-Cubs run and outfielder Carlos Peguero had trouble fielding a Brad Snyder single with two outs to allow a pair of runs.

The Rainiers made their only appearances on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Third baseman Alex Liddi hit a three-run home run, his team-leading 26th of the season, to cut Tacoma's lead to 9-3.

Iowa right-hander Casey Coleman held Tacoma to five hits with one walk and five strikeouts over five shutout innings to collect the win.

Starter Luke French (8-8) was dealt the loss for the Rainiers after allowing seven runs, six earned, on eight hits over 2.1 innings, with three walks and two strikeouts.

The Rainiers (60-60) return to action 7:05 p.m. on Saturday to play the second game of the club's four-game series with the Cubs (55-65). Left-hander Chris Seddon (7-6, 6.53) is slated to take the mound for Tacoma against right-hander Alberto Cabrera (2-3, 5.82) for Iowa.
