Iowa Cubs News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (61-60) scored five runs in the second inning and beat the Iowa Cubs (55-66) 8-3 at Cheney Stadium tonight. The loss ended the Cubs six-game winning streak and a streak of eight straight wins over the Rainiers going back to 2009. This series is tied 1-1.
The Rainiers sent 10 men to the plate and took control of the game with their five-run second. The Rainiers scored their first run with the aid of the Cubs' first of a season-high four errors in the game. With runners on first and third, Greg Halman stole second base and Mike Wilson came in from third when catcher Welington Castillo's throw skipped away for an error. After another base hit and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0, Cubs' starter Alberto Cabrera walked two men to load the bases. Johan Limonta capitalized with a double to right field that cleared the bases for a 5-0 lead. Cabrera (2-4) came out after two innings after allowing five runs on four hits and three walks. He got the loss.
Carlton Smith followed Cabrera and allowed three runs on six hits over four innings in relief. Wilson greeted Smith with a homer to lead off the third inning. Carlos Peguero added RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings to complete the Rainiers' scoring. Blake Parker and Scott Maine each struck out two in a scoreless inning to finish the game on the mound for the Cubs.
Rainiers' starter Chris Seddon (8-6) allowed three runs on three hits in six innings for the win. Ryan Flaherty extended his hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer in the third. Scott Moore tripled and scored on a groundout in the fifth. Bryan LaHair hit a solo homer in the sixth. It was his 31st home run of the season, making him the leader in all of minor league baseball. He is now tied for fourth on Iowa's single season home run list.
The Cubs and Rainiers continue this series tomorrow night at 3:35 p.m Central time. The Cubs will send LH Chris Rusin (2-1, 2.67) to the mound against RH Erasmo Ramirez (2-0, 4.90) for the Rainiers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 3:15.
