Iowa Cubs News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Iowa Cubs (55-65) won their sixth straight game with 9-3 win over the Tacoma Rainiers (60-60) tonight at Cheney Field. The win also snapped a streak of four straight road losses for the Cubs. The Cubs have now won four straight games at Tacoma going back to 2009.

The Cubs struck quickly tonight when Brett Jackson led off the game with a home run off Rainiers' starter Luke French. It was Jackson's eighth home run with Iowa this season and his fourth to lead off the first inning of a game. He is the first Cubs' player since 2000 to have four leadoff home runs in a season. The Cubs added a second run in first inning and tacked on three more in the second. Jackson drove in a run with a groundout and Lou Montanez slugged a two-run homer. The Cubs took advantage of two errors by the Rainiers in the third inning to score three more runs and knocked French from the game. French (8-8) was charged with seven runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings in the loss.

Cubs' starter Casey Coleman (5-2) worked five shutout innings to pick up the win. He allowed five hits, one walk, and struck out five. Robert Coello followed with two scoreless innings and struck out five more. Justin Berg pitched the eighth and allowed a three-run homer to Alex Liddi for all of Tacoma's runs. John Gaub finished with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.

Chaz Roe gave the Rainiers a boost with 4.2 strong innings in relief. He struck out nine and was charged with an unearned run while finishing the third inning for French. The Cubs scored their final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Ryan Flaherty off Fabio Castro. Flaherty finished with three hits and has hit safely in a season-high seven straight games.

The Cubs and Rainiers continue this series tomorrow night at 9:05 p.m Central time. The Cubs will send RH Alberto Cabrera (1-2, 6.14) to the mound against LH Chris Seddon (7-6, 6.53) for the Rainiers. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 8:45.
