Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers improved to 2-0 on Friday night with a 5-2 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes at Cheney Stadium.

Rainiers starting pitcher Cody Martin retired the first 12 Isotopes batters he faced and earned his first win of the season after totaling 5.1 innings of work while allowing just four hits with six strikeouts.

First baseman Efren Navarro (2x4), catcher Mike Zunino (2x4), and third baseman Ed Lucas (2x4) all recorded multiple hits for Tacoma while combining for two runs scored and four RBI.

Navarro smacked an RBI single in the first inning to score shortstop Shawn O'Malley from second and give the Rainiers an early 1-0 lead.

Tacoma added to their advantage with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from catcher Mike Zunino, a passed ball, and a two-run double down the right field line from third baseman Ed Lucas.

After allowing a single to Joey Wong and a double to Rafael Ynoa in the top of the sixth, Martin lost his shutout bid when a ground ball from Ryan Casteel ricocheted off second base and skittered into center field, plating two Albuquerque runs.

The two clubs combined for just three base hits over the final three innings, wrapping up a 5-2 victory for the Rainiers.

Tacoma relievers David Rollins and Blake Parker combined to toss 3.2 scoreless frames at the end of the game. Parker allowed just one hit and fanned two in the ninth inning to pick up his first save of the year.

The Rainiers gun for the series victory with left-hander James Paxton (0-0, -.--) on the mound tomorrow, Saturday, April 9. The Isotopes will counter with righty Jeff Hoffman (0-0, -.--). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PT.
