Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers were handed their first loss of the season, a 2-0 decision, by the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night at Cheney Stadium.
Tacoma starting pitcher James Paxton worked 4.0 innings and allowed just one run on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts - he was tagged with his first loss of the season.
Infielder Efren Navarro led the Rainiers offense going 3-for-4 on three singles. Catcher Rob Brantly (2x3), making his Tacoma debut, was the only other Rainiers player to notch multiple hits in the contest.
Isotopes right fielder Jordan Patterson drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth and came around to score the first run of the game on an RBI bunt single from third baseman Tim Smalling three batters later.
Smalling laced a two-out double in the top of the sixth inning and was driven in by second baseman Jeff Bianchi to give Albuquerque the final 2-0 margin.
In his Triple-A debut, Rainiers left-handed reliever Paul Fry struck out the side in the seventh inning. Fry and Jonathan Aro combined to hold the Isotopes scoreless over the final three frames.
Tacoma and Albuquerque wrap up their season-opening series tomorrow, Sunday, April 10. The Rainiers will send right-hander Adrian Sampson (0-0, -.--) to the mound, while the Isotopes will hand the ball to right-hander Shane Carle (0-0, -.--). First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. PT.
