Gallo Brings in Four to Down Iowa
April 9, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - Joey Gallo homered twice as the Round Rock Express took a 9-3 victory over the Iowa Cubs, their third straight, on Saturday night at Principal Park. The Express totaled 14 hits with four extra-base knocks.
Round Rock got the scoring going with a run in the second and from there, ran away with the game. Gallo skied a ball over the right-center fence for three RBI to increase the visitor's lead to 4-0. The Express added to their lead in the fifth as Nomar Maraza hit a two-run shot and the team batted around to score four total runs in the inning. Another tally was put on the board in the sixth when Gallo hit his second long ball of the night off the left field roof to push the Express lead to 9-0.
Iowa was stifled at the plate by the Round Rock staff until the eighth inning. Held to just four hits through the first seven frames, John Andreoli sparked the I-Cubs as he legged out an infield single with one out. Arismendy Alcantara followed with a double and both base runners scored on Ryan Kalish's double to upset the shutout. Kalish was brought home by a single off the bat of Daniel Vogelbach to give the I-Cubs a three-run inning, but it was too little too late as Iowa ultimately fell short.
In his season debut, left hander Eric Jokisch lasted 4.1 innings and was tagged with the loss after allowing eight earned runs off 11 hits. Armando Rivero, also appearing for the first time of 2016, gave up a single run in 1.2 innings while striking out two. Scott Barnes, Carl Edwards Jr. and Miguel Mejia all put their mark on the relief effort as each one pitched a scoreless inning and struck out one.
Right-hander Nick Tepesch took the hill for the Express and earned a win in his first start. Tepesch went five innings where he struck out two and gave up no runs. The Express brought out a new pitcher in every inning following Tepesch, including Luke Jackson who is on a major league rehabilitation assignment.
Iowa and Round Rock play the final game of the series, Sunday at Principal Park with first pitch scheduled for 1:08 p.m. Promotions include Pedal to the Park and Knothole Gang. All games are broadcast on AM 940 and online at iowacubs.com. Tickets can be purchased in person at Principal Park, by phone at (515) 243-6111 or online at iowacubs.com.
