Tacoma Rainiers News Release

FRESNO, Calif. - Six unanswered runs were not enough for the Tacoma Rainiers (19-14) on Wednesday afternoon, as they fell to the Fresno Grizzlies (14-18) by a score of 7-6 at Chukchansi Park.

Starting pitcher James Paxton did not allow a hit in 1.1 innings of work during his scheduled short start. He was relieved by Jordan Pries, Casey Coleman, and Kraig Sitton, who allowed seven runs on 11 hits over the final 6.2 frames. Pries (0-1), who allowed six runs on seven hits, took his first loss of the year with Tacoma.

First baseman Stefen Romero and left fielder Daniel Robertson both lifted home runs in the contest, combining to drive in five runs. Second baseman Shawn O'Malley (2x3) posted the club's only multi-hit effort.

Andrew Aplin drew a one-out walk to open the bottom of the third for Fresno and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Nolan Fontana drove in Aplin with an RBI groundout, but was thrown out at first base. Tony Kemp followed with a single and was driven in on a double from Colin Moran, making the Grizzlies lead 2-0.

A two-out double from Eury Perez and an RBI single from Roberto Pena gave Fresno another run in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Grizzlies a 3-0 edge.

Fresno logged a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run to right-center field from Jon Singleton, to expand their advantage to 7-0.

Rainiers shortstop Chris Taylor drew a two-out walk and was joined on the bases by designated Efren Navarro after being hit by a pitch to set up a three-run home run from Romero. His shot to center field cut the Grizzlies lead to 7-3.

O'Malley kicked off the Tacoma seventh with a walk and was brought in on a home run from Robertson, his second of the year, that brought the Rainiers within two runs. Powell struck out following Robertson's home run, but took first, second, third, and ultimately home on four wild pitches from Jordan Jankowski - the spat of wild pitching reduced the Grizzlies lead to just 7-6.

Tacoma and Fresno forge on with game three of the series tomorrow, Thursday, May 12. Rainiers right-hander Adrian Sampson (3-2, 3.47) and Grizzlies lefty Tommy Shirley (3-1, 2.79) will share the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT.
