COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Tacoma Rainiers fell behind early and stayed there in an 8-3 loss to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox at Security Service Field on Friday night.
The Sky Sox pulled ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Designated hitter Hernan Iribarren hit an RBI single and then scored on outfielder Charlie Culberson's RBI triple one at-bat later.
Catcher Jason Jaramillo helped cut the Rainiers deficit to 2-1 after driving in Rich Poythress with a two-out double in the second, but Colorado Springs outscored Tacoma 6-2 over the final seven innings to seal a series win in the finale between the two clubs.
Brad Miller's RBI double in the fifth marked one of the eight hits the Rainiers combined to collect on Friday. Miller has now hit safely in a team-high 17 consecutive games dating back to May 29 and has reached safely in each of his 21 games since joining Tacoma on May 24. The infielder is batting .369 (27x73) with eight extra-base hits and 23 RBI over that 17-game streak.
Robert Andino turned in Tacoma's only multi-hit effort after going 2-for-4 with a double. The infielder has now turned in two-hit performances in each of his last three games.
Brian Sweeney (7-3) was dealt the loss in his 21st appearance and eighth start with the Rainiers this season. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings of action. He struck out five Sky Sox batters without issuing a walk.
Tacoma's ends their season-high 12-game road trip maintaining a 1.5-game lead over Colorado Springs for first place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division.
The Rainiers (44-32) return to Cheney Stadium tomorrow, June 22, to open an 11-game homestand that begins with a four-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies. Left-hander James Paxton (4-5, 5.18) is scheduled to start for Tacoma in the opener against Grizzlies right-hander Mitch Lively (3-1, 7.16).
