ROUND ROCK, Tex. - The Memphis Redbirds were handed a 13-2 loss to the Round Rock Express in a finale of a four-game series on Friday night at the Dell Diamond.

Memphis (36-40) dropped seven of its eight games during the road trip through Albuquerque and Round Rock, and now trail Iowa by 2.0 games in the PCL American Northern Division.

Round Rock recorded 20 hits against Memphis pitching on the night, the most given up by the Redbirds this season. The previous high was 18, which was established during the road trip on June 16 at Albuquerque.

Outfielder Oscar Taveras accounted for three of the Redbirds' five hits. Outfielder Jamie Romak and second baseman Ryan Jackson also had a hit.

Express starter Brad Mills improved to 7-1 with seven strong innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Memphis scored first, as Romak led off the top of the third with his 21st double of the season. He scored two batters later on a Jackson sacrifice fly.

Memphis starter Boone Whiting was cruising before Round Rock erupted for seven runs in the fifth and knocking the right-hander from the game. The inning began five consecutive base hits before Whiting struck out Joey Butler for the first out. Yangervis Solarte followed with a two-run single up the middle to chase Whiting from the game.

Rangers prospect Mike Olt then greeted new reliever Eric Fornataro with a towering three-run home run to left, his eighth of the season. The seven runs allowed in the frame were the second-most this season.

Memphis got a run back in the next frame, beginning with an Adron Chambers leadoff walk. Three batters later, Chambers would scamper all the way home from first on a Taveras RBI double off the center field wall.

Round Rock quickly countered with three more runs against Fornataro in the sixth. The Express loaded the bases on three singles and all scored on a Solarte bases-clearing two-bagger down the left field line. The Express added their last three runs in the eighth, beginning with four consecutive base hits off Mitchell Boggs. Chris McGuiness followed with a two-run single to right.

Whiting (4-3) was touched for six runs on nine hits with six strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings for his second loss in a row. Whiting has allowed 12 runs over his last two starts (8.1 IP).

Fornataro gave up four runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings and allowed both inherited runners to score. Boggs scattered five hits for three runs in one inning.

In his second rehab appearance, Fernando Salas gave up a single and struck out one in one inning pitched (11 pitches, 10 strikes). He induced pop ups to shortstop and first base and struck out Eli Whiteside swinging.

The Redbirds return home to AutoZone Park tomorrow for an eight-game homestand with the division-rival Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) and Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple-A Dodgers). Memphis has yet to announce a starter in the 7:05 pm CT opener. Iowa will counter with left-hander Chris Rusin (6-6, 3.06).
