Sacramento River Cats News Release
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The River Cats were swept for the first time since August 8-11, 2011 in a 5-2 loss to the Salt Lake Bees on Friday night at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Sacramento scored in the top of the first inning on Scott Moore's team-lead-tying 10th home run-a solo shot to center field. The Bees took the lead with a three-run bottom half, scoring all the runs they'd need in the win. The first run of the inning came on a Kole Calhoun RBI-single, the second came when Luis Rodriguez lined out to Daric Barton, scoring Matt Long, and the third run crossed the plate when Tommy Field singled-home Calhoun.
After the Bees extended their lead to 4-1 in the fourth, the River Cats plated their second and final run in the top of the fifth when Stephen Vogt brought home Grant Green with a sacrifice fly to left field. Salt Lake tacked on a fifth run in the bottom of the seventh, ultimately beating Sacramento, 5-2.
Moore finished 1-for-4 with a home run, while Green went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two doubles. Sonny Gray (7-5) gave up four runs on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings for the loss. Four of Sacramento's six hits went for extra bases.
Jeremy Berg (3-0) earned the win, giving up one run in two innings of relief on a bullpen day for the Bees. Calhoun, Long and Field each collected two hits for Salt Lake, while Andrew Romine went 0-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
The loss is just the fourth time in River Cats history that the club was swept, and they haven't lost every game of a series since August 8-11, 2011 on the road against the Iowa Cubs.
The River Cats return home on Sutter Health Fireworks Saturday for their longest homestand of the season as lefty Andrew Werner (6-9, 5.88 ERA) takes on Colorado Springs righty Parker Frazier (0-0, 10.61 ERA). The 11-game slate will feature various promotions including the team's 1,000th home game on Saturday, two bobblehead giveaways, a rally towel giveaway and four fireworks shows including the July 3 Independence Day Celebration.
