Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers won a slugfest with the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 10-6 on Monday night at Cheney Stadium. The two clubs combined for 29 hits, nine of which went for extra bases.
Rainiers starting pitcher Adrian Sampson allowed six runs (five earned) on 12 hits through 5.1 innings of work and earned his second win with Tacoma. The local product walked two and struck out three.
Tacoma piled it on early and often, scoring nine runs in the first four frames and racing out to a 9-3 lead over the visiting Redbirds.
Responding to a Memphis run in the top of the first, Justin Ruggiano lined a two-run home run over the left field wall in the Rainiers fourth at bat of the contest to give Tacoma a 2-1 lead.
Solo home runs by Jabari Blash in the second and Stefen Romero in the third contributed to a five-run outburst from the Rainiers offense that created a 7-1 lead. Blash's home run was his 18th of the season for Tacoma and his 28th overall, the second best mark in minor league baseball.
The first three Redbirds batters to the plate in the fourth inning reached base and led to a pair of runs for the visitors, cutting the Rainiers lead to 7-3.
Tacoma answered in the bottom of the fourth with their fourth dinger of the night, a two-run bomb off the bat of Chris Taylor that gave the Rainiers another six-run lead.
Leading 9-6 in the seventh inning, Patrick Kivlehan belted a solo home run to left-center to create the final margin of 10-6. Kivlehan's 19 home runs this year lead the Rainiers and are third most among Mariners farmhands.
Romero and Kivlehan both posted 3-for-4 performances and combined for four runs and two RBI to lead the Rainiers offense. Ji-Man Choi (2x3) and Steve Baron (2x4) posted the other multi-hit performances. The five home runs smacked by Tacoma matched a season high for the club.
J.C. Ramirez and Tony Zych closed out the final 3.0 frames for Tacoma and held Memphis scoreless on just two hits - the duo combined for one walk and three strikeouts.
The series between the Rainiers (61-69) and Redbirds (65-65) continues tomorrow, August 25 at 7:05 p.m. Tacoma is scheduled to start right-handed Ji-Man Choi (3-3, 4.78), while Memphis is expected to call on the services of lefty Tyler Lyons (8-5, 3.21).
