Bonifacio Joins Iowa, Silva Released

DES MOINES, Iowa (Aug. 25, 2015) - The Chicago Cubs made a series of transactions today affecting Iowa's active roster for tonight's game against Fresno. Chicago signed infielder/outfielder Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A. In addition, outfielder Rubi Silva has been released.

Bonifacio, 30, joins the Cubs organization for the second time in his career. He appeared in 69 games for Chicago last season and batted .279 with 14 doubles and 14 stolen bases in 20 attempts before being traded to Atlanta on July 31 with pitcher James Russell for catcher Victor Caratini.

The Dominican Republic native signed a major league contract with the Chicago White Sox in January and hit .167 (13-for-78) with four RBI and one steal in 47 games before being released on Aug 21.

Bonifacio has 769 career games of major league experience with eight organizations. He has hit .259 (656-for-2534) with 165 stolen bases in 213 chances (77 percent success rate) between Miami, Arizona, Kansas City, Atlanta, Washington and Toronto in addition to the Cubs and White Sox.

In Bonifacio's 10-year minor league career, he has swiped 296 bags in 381 attempts (78 percent success rate).

Silva, 26, batted .282 (84-for-298) with 11 home runs and 48 RBI to go along with 10 outfield assists for Iowa this season.

After these moves, Iowa's active roster is full at 25 players plus one player on the disabled list.

Iowa has now made 187 players moves this season, a franchise record. The previous record was 172 set in 2013.
