51s Respond with 3-0 Shutout of Zephyrs
August 25, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Brandon Allen and Darrell Ceciliani homered, And Dillon Gee scattered seven hits across seven innings to lead the Las Vegas 51s to a 3-0 win over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Tuesday night.
A night after the Zephyrs snapped a club-record 15-game losing streak with a 5-0 shutout of Las Vegas, the 51s turned the tables by blanking the Z's. It was the 11th time this season New Orleans was held scoreless, tied with Round Rock for the most in the Pacific Coast League.
Faced with using all relievers for the night, the Zephyrs got two scoreless frames from Craig Stem before the 51s capitalized on two errors on the same play in the third inning to grab the lead.
Pat Urckfitz (0-5) issued a two-out walk to Ceciliani, and Eric Campbell followed with a single to right. Ceciliani slid safely into third, and the throw from Vinny Rottino skipped away from Zack Cox. Backing up the play, Urckfitz threw wildly to second as Campbell was advancing, allowing Ceciliani to trot home.
Allen led off the fourth inning with a home run deep over the right field fence, his 16th of the year, and Ceciliani homered against Chris Reed an inning later to extend the Las Vegas lead to 3-0.
Dillon Gee (7-3) worked around trouble in each of the first three innings to keep the Zephyrs off the scoreboard. After back-to-back singles by Reid Brignac and Tomas Telis, Gee retired 10 consecutive batters en route to seven scoreless frames.
Telis collected his second single with one out in the eighth and got to third base with two outs, only to be thrown out at the plate trying to score on a would-be wild pitch by Zack Thornton.
John Church surrendered a leadoff single to Nick Wittgren in the ninth and a two-out single to Austin Nola to put runners at the corners before retiring Austin Wates for his fourth save in as many chances.
Brignac extended his hitting streak to 18 games with his third-inning single, tying him for the second-longest in the PCL this season. Telis had two hits and a stolen base to improve to 6-for-13 in his four games with the Zephyrs, and Nola chipped in three hits.
With the win, Las Vegas inched two games ahead of the El Paso Chihuahuas for first place in the Pacific Southern Division.
The Zephyrs and 51s conclude the four-game set on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
