Memphis Redbirds News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers slugged five home runs on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Memphis Redbirds on Monday from Cheney Field.
The Rainiers five home runs mark the most the Redbirds have surrendered as a staff all season, previously allowing four long balls on May 14 in Colorado Springs.
Memphis starting pitcher Nick Greenwood lasted just 3.0 innings on the hill, allowing career-highs in hits (12), runs (9), earned runs (9), and home runs (4).
The loss puts the Redbirds six games behind first place Round Rock with just 15 games left to play on the season for Memphis.
Despite not coming out on top, the Redbirds offense was able to cross the plate six times on Monday night, jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first.
Right fielder Xavier Scruggs drove home the first run of the game for the Redbirds, singling home Dean Anna.
In his first Triple-A game, infielder Aledmys Diaz recorded his first hit and RBI in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Cody Stanley on an RBI single. Diaz would later add a double in his first game in a Memphis uniform.
Two batters later in the fourth, Rafael Ortega drove home Jacob Wilson for the Redbirds' third run of the contest.
Memphis was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the sixth inning, an frame that saw the Redbirds plate three runs coming from an RBI-double from Rafael Ortega, a run-scoring single from Dan Johnson, and another RBI-double off the bat of Xavier Scruggs.
The rally ended at three runs in the sixth for the Redbirds, as the club from the Bluff City would not score another run over the contest's final three innings.
Memphis looks to rebound on Tuesday when they will send southpaw Tyler Lyons (8-5, 3.21) to the hill. Lyons returns to the Redbirds after his three previous outings were spent with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Rainiers will counter with veteran hurler Chien-Ming Wang (3-3, 4.78), with first pitch from Tacoma set for 9:05pm CT.
