Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - The Baysox took the first game of a scheduled doubleheader, 7-1 Saturday before game two was suspended due to rain. In the first game, Bowie starter Chorye Spoon threw 6.0 shutout innings to fuel the victory, but game two was suspended with the Baysox leading 4-3. When play resumes, Jeff Nettles will be batting with Matt Wieters on first in the bottom of the third inning. That game will be completed as the first game of a doubleheader Sunday, June 29, with game one resuming at 6:05 p.m. The second game, Sunday's regularly scheduled contest, will begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the suspended affair. Both games will be seven-inning contests.
When the Baysox took the field Saturday to play the game originally scheduled for Friday, Jeff Nettles put Bowie ahead with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning.
The Baysox got rolling with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Sebastien Boucher led off with a bunt single down the third base line. Blake Davis tried to sacrifice Boucher to second with another bunt, but third baseman Jason Bowers made an errant throw to first and Davis reached safely. Mike Rodriguez tried to advance both runners but popped up a bunt to the pitcher for the first out. Carlos Rojas hit a single into right field to score Boucher. Lou Montanez drew a walk to load the bases and Nolan Reimold grounded out to third, scoring Davis. Now with men on second and third and two out, Matt Wieters got his first hit as a member of the Baysox, lacing a ground rule double down the right field line to score Rojas and Montanez and give Bowie a 5-0 lead.
Bowie added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Blake Davis hit one to the gap in left-center and legged out a triple. Mike Rodriguez drove him home with a two-run blast over the right field wall, putting Bowie ahead 7-0.
The Curve got a run back in the top of the seventh on a solo homerun by Steve Lerud off reliever Adam Loewen, but Gerardo Casadiego came in and retired the only batter he faced for the last out.
Catcher Matt Wieters made his debut with Bowie, going 1-for-3 in game one with two RBI. Wieters also had two hits in game two before it was called due to unplayable field conditions.
In addition to the doubleheader, Sunday is also the third annual Pink In The Park Day at Prince George's Stadium. The Baysox will wear one-of-a-kind pink jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. Proceeds will go to the Holy Cross Hospital Cancer Institute Fund.
The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
