Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Starter J.D. Durbin worked into the eighth inning, and Reading put up a 7-0 lead that the Aeros could not overcome as the Phillies pulled out a 7-2 win over Akron before 4,224 fans at Canal Park Saturday night. The Aeros fell to 48-32, while Reading improved to 31-48.

The Phillies put two runs on the board in the second inning off Aeros starter Scott Lewis. Jeremy Slayden and Joey Hammond led off the inning with singles, and a groundout moved the runners to second and third. Jake Blalock brought in the first run on a ground ball that shortstop Josh Rodriguez fielded behind second, but one-hopped Stephen Head at first for an infield single. Javon Moran followed with a grounder to short, but this time Rodriguez could not control it as Hammond came home on the error to make it 2-0.

Reading batted around against Lewis in the fourth inning, plating four runs. Hammond led off with a double to center and scored on a single by Neil Sellers. Blalock followed with a single, and an RBI single by Moran made it 4-0. Lewis walked Michael Spidale to load the bases, and Lou Marson delivered a two-run single giving the Phillies a 6-0 lead.

Jim Deters came on in relief and kept the Phillies at bay in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Aeros struggled to get anything off Durbin. Akron did not have a runner reach second base until the sixth inning when Jose Constanza led off with a single and Trevor Crowe drew a walk, but the rally short-circuited as Rodriguez struck out and Bronson Sardinha grounded into a 5-4-3 double play.

Slayden gave the R-Phils a 7-0 lead with a home run into the bullpen in right-center to begin the seventh inning off Deters. Akron eventually plated its first run in the bottom of the seventh when Head doubled and Brandon Pinckney drove him home on an RBI single to right, making it 7-1.

The Aeros had a rally cooking in the eighth inning, but the Phillies cut it short with a fine defensive play. Constanza singled to lead off and reached second when Trevor Crowe grounded to first, but Mike Eylward's throw to second pulled Harman off the bag for an error. Rodriguez followed with a base hit that drove Constanza home, and put runners on the corners. Sardinha then smoked a line drive to Eylward, who snagged it just before it hit the ground and doubled off Rodriguez as he took his secondary lead, leaving just a runner at third with two down and killing Akron's final threat.

Durbin (2-4) earned the win, working into the eighth inning and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking two and striking out three. Lewis (3-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs (five earned) on nine hits in four innings of work. Rodriguez and Constanza each went 2-4, and Head and Ryan Goleski both doubled for Akron's only extra-base hits. Deters and Erik Stiller tossed a combined five innings, allowing only one run in relief.

The Aeros will try for the series win against the Phillies as they wrap up their eight-game homestand Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Akron's Steven Wright (1-1, 4.22 ERA) will face off against Reading's Tyson Brummett (1-0, 4.30 ERA). Sunday is Family Fun Pack Day at Canal Park with four tickets, four hot dogs, four bags of chips and four fountain sodas for $48. Kids can also run the bases after the game. The game broadcast begins at 1:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
