Lansing Lugnuts News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps (16-22) put together three separate three-run rallies to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (17-22), 9-0, in a game shortened by rain to six innings (plus two pitches in the seventh) on Thursday night at Parkview Field.
The Lugnuts lost their ninth straight road game, tying a franchise record, in opening the four-game series in Fort Wayne.
TinCaps starter Joey Cantillo (Win, 1-2) faced the minimum in six innings, allowing only one base runner - a Rafael Lantigua single in the second inning wiped out one pitch later when Lantigua was picked off first and caught stealing by catcher Blake Hunt. Cantillo struck out six Lugnuts.
Nuts starter Sean Wymer (Loss, 2-3) fared worse, allowing 12 hits and nine runs (six earned) in 5 2/3 innings, walking none and striking out one.
Wymer's troubles began in the second inning when a fielding error by third baseman Nick Podkul opened the door for a Nick Feight RBI single and a Jawuan Harris two-run single.
In the third, Justin Lopez's RBI single and Luis Almanzar's two-run triple increased the TinCaps' lead to 6-0.
The 'Caps closed out the scoring in the sixth inning, sparked by a Lopez RBI double. Two batters later, Grant Little greeted incoming reliever Joey Pulido with a two-run double.
In the loss, Podkul went 0-for-2, ending his Midwest League best 24-game on-base streak.
Right-hander Cobi Johnson (3.38 ERA) starts the second game of the four-game series, taking on Fort Wayne right-hander Sam Keating (2.70) at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Parkview Field.
The Lansing Lugnuts return home on Monday, May 20th, opening an eight-game homestand with a Dollar Monday - $1 hot dogs, $1 popcorn, $1 ice cream sandwiches, $1 Miller High Life and $1 16-oz. fountain drinks!
