
Railroaders Shut Out Cougars in Series Opener

GENEVA, Ill. - The Cougars were limited to six hits as the Cleburne Railroaders earned a 4-0 shutout victory on Friday night at Northwestern Medicine Field.
Railroaders' 38-46) starter Kody Bullard (6-5) earned a quality start as the left-hander tossed six scoreless innings with three strikeouts and just one walk. Following Bullard's departure, Austin Fairchild, Danny Zardon, and Nick Gardewine combined out of the bullpen to keep the Cougars (44-41) off the scoreboard.
Cleburne struck early against Cougars' starter Jack Fox (8-3). Chuck Taylor led off the inning with a single and later in the inning came around to score on a passed ball that made it 1-0.
The Railroaders added another run in the top of the third. With one out, Chase Simpson doubled into the right field corner. After Hill Alexander drew a walk, Wyatt Mathisen singled to score Simpson and push the lead to two runs.
In the top of the fifth inning, Cleburne continued to add to its lead. Zach Nerier singled to lead off the inning and later came around to score on an error by Cougars' second basemen Sherman Johnson. Later in the inning, Mitch Ghelfi hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Simpson to make it 4-0.
The series with the Railroaders continues Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.. Right-hander Josh Lucas (1-4, 5.63) will take the hill for Cleburne, while the starter for the Cougars is to be announced.
