(Moosic, PA) - Every batter in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lineup reached base, accumulating 15 total hits en route to a 6-4 victory over the Pawtucket Red Sox and a split of the four-game series on Thursday evening at PNC Field.
The bottom four hitters in the Pawtucket lineup went a combined 7-for-15, but the PawSox (16-18) were only able to muster one run after the second inning.
Pawtucket starter Roenis Elias (0-3) allowed 13 baserunners and recorded 12 outs. He surrendered 11 hits, tied for the most by a PawSox pitcher since the start of last season.
Elias' third pitch of the game was yanked out of the park by Jake Cave for a leadoff home run (1).
Scranton (18-17) sought its second run of the opening frame when Donovan Solano sent a two-out double into the left field corner. But Pawtucket executed a terrific relay (Blake Swihart to Deven Marrero to Sandy Leon) to gun down the baserunner Rob Refsnyder at home plate.
The PawSox took the sudden momentum into the second inning, as they rallied for three runs against RailRiders starter Brady Lail (1-0) thanks to Scranton's sloppy defense.
Two errors and a walk loaded the bases for Pawtucket with no outs. Ryan LaMarre hit into a force out at second, but Solano fired the return throw to first into the stands, allowing an additional run to score and LaMarre to advance to second on the RailRiders' third error of the inning. The next batter, Leon, singled home LaMarre to give the PawSox a 3-1 lead.
However, Scranton answered right back in the bottom of the second. Elias issues a pair of walks and a single with one out, loading the bases for Cave. Cave delivered a two-run single into left field that knotted the score at 3-3. He ended the night 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Lail settled in, allowing just three baserunners-all singles-over the next four innings. Meanwhile, the RailRiders hung a run on the scoreboard in each of the middle three innings.
Aaron Judge drove an RBI double to left field in the fourth, giving Scranton the lead. Solano and Nick Swisher led off the fifth inning with consecutive singles, knocking Elias out of the game. Robby Scott entered from the bullpen, retiring the first two batters he faced before allowing a two-out RBI single to Diaz.
Swisher was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play by Swihart, who collected two outfield assists in his seventh appearance in left field in his last 13 games.
Gary Sanchez drove in Cave with a single in the sixth for Scranton's fifth and final unanswered run, producing a 6-3 leading.
After reliever Anthony Swarzak entered the game with two outs and two runners on in the eighth inning, Rusney Castillo burned him for an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 6-4. He went 6-for-15 in the four game series.
However, Swarzak got LaMarre to fly out in foul ground to end the threat and then sealed the game in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Robby Scott and Kyle Martin combined to allow one run in four innings of relief for Pawtucket.
The PawSox return to McCoy Stadium for a six-game homestand beginning tomorrow evening against the Gwinnett Braves at 7:05 p.m. Lefthander Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 4.70) is scheduled to make the fourth start of his rehabilitation assignment for Pawtucket against Gwinnett righty John Gant (2-0, 2.96).
