Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs lost Thursday night to the Indianapolis Indians by a score of 6-3. Indians shortstop Gift Ngoepe hit a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead Indianapolis to victory. The loss gave the Chiefs a series split with the Indians in the four-game set.
Syracuse (19-14) wasted no time in getting on the board, striking for a run in the bottom of the first. Trea Turner opened the frame with a stand-up triple to deep center field off of Indianapolis (17-15) starter Tyler Glasnow. Brian Goodwin then plated Turner with a sacrifice fly to right-center, giving the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead. The run allowed by Glasnow was the first given up in his last three outings, a scoreless span of 18 innings.
The Chiefs' lead held until the third inning, when Ngoepe singled to center with one out for the Indians. After stealing second base Ngoepe was driven in by a single from Adam Frazier, knotting the score at 1-1.
Both teams took the lead throughout the fourth inning. Syracuse starter Paolo Espino walked Jason Rogers with one out. Rogers then advanced to second on an Espino wild pitch. Dan Gamache then grounded out, with Rogers going to third on the play. The ensuing batter, Willy Garcia, drove a double down the third-base line, scoring Rogers for a 2-1 Indianapolis lead.
Syracuse answered back in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Jason Martinson and Caleb Ramsey strung together back-to-back singles, putting Chiefs runners on first and second base. Pedro Severino then turned on a Glasnow pitch and ripped a double off the left-field wall, scoring both Martinson and Ramsey to give the lead back to Syracuse, 3-2.
The score remained until Indianapolis tied it with one swing in the sixth. Danny Ortiz led off the inning with a solo home run off of Paolo Espino, tying the game at 3-3. The home run was Ortiz's third on the season.
Espino left the game after seven innings of work. He allowed three earned runs and six hits, while striking out 10 Indians. It was the most strikeouts in a game by a Chiefs pitcher since last August 3rd, when Stephen Strasburg struck out 11 against Pawtucket. Erik Davis came on in relief, working a scoreless inning before running into trouble in the ninth.
Two straight walks from Davis put Indianapolis runners on first and second with one out. Davis was then pulled in favor of Juan Gutierrez, who came on to face Ngoepe. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Ngoepe unleashed a home run to dead center over the 400-foot marker, giving the Indians a 6-3 lead.
Syracuse put two runners aboard in the bottom half of the ninth, bringing up Matt den Dekker, the tying run. Jorge Rondon shut the door, however, with a strikeout to end the game.
The Chiefs play Friday night in Rochester when they open a three-game series with the Red Wings. A.J. Cole is scheduled to pitch for Syracuse, while Rochester has penciled in Jason Wheeler for the start. First pitch for the game is slated for 7:05.
