TOLEDO, Ohio - The Louisville Bats dropped the fifth game of a rare five-game series at Toledo on Thursday, by a score of 4-3. Left-hander Cody Reed (2-1, 1.88) took the loss, but didn't get a lot of help behind him, with poor fielding that resulted in two unearned Toledo runs in the first inning.

The Mud Hens' offense started fast, pushing across a three-spot in the bottom of the first off Reed. Toledo center fielder Cameron Maybin scored the game's first run, off a Casey McGehee bunt back to the pitcher that resulted in an errant throw. Toledo ended up scoring two more runs in the first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on just two hits.

Toledo added another run to their lead in the fourth, courtesy of a Jordany Valdespin RBI single. Cody Reed left after four, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits, with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Bats' offense was quiet through the first four innings, before tagging Toledo starter Thad Weber (4-1, 1.80) for three runs on five straight hits to knock him out of the game in the fifth inning. A two-run single by Juan Perez and an RBI single off the bat of Jermaine Curtis put the Bats within a run. Weber's final line was four and one-third innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking one.

The Louisville bullpen did its job in limiting the damage, with right-handers Tim Melville, Chad Rogers, and J.J. Hoover combining for four innings of scoreless baseball. Toledo's bullpen held the Bats scoreless as well, going four and two-third innings.

Left-hander Chad Bell (1-0, 0.00) earned the win for the Mud Hens, going three and one-third with two hits, no runs, and three strikeouts. Bobby Parnell earned his fourth save of the year despite giving up three hits in the ninth.

The Bats had their chances to tie or take the lead, but were thrown out on the base paths three times, including twice at home plate. They also out-hit Toledo 12 to eight.

Tomorrow at 7:15 p.m., the Bats will travel to Columbus for three games to finish up an 11-game road trip, which they've started 4-4. Right-hander Josh Smith (3-2, 2.38) will go for Louisville, with lefty T.J. House (2-2, 6.39) expected to go for Columbus.
