Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The RailRiders collected 10 hits on the night, but managed one run in a 2-1 setback to the PawSox. The RailRiders have dropped to .500 with losses in four of six. Tonight, a Pawtucket team that started the year 0-4 against the RailRiders seeks the franchise's first series win at SWB since the 2013 PawSox took three of four from Aug. 21-24.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder doubled on a three-hit night as the four-hole hitter. He has reached safely in 19 straight games and owns a 15-game hitting streak. Both rank as the IL's longest active runs. Lehigh Valley's Cam Perkins set the 2016 IL standard for hitting streaks, a 15-gamer from April 12-May 3. An acute awareness of the strike zone has Refsnyder ranked third in the league's PA/K ratio (3rd, 9.85:1). Refsnyder's hitting run has lifted his average by 98 points (.190-.288). He entered the last road trip in a 4-for-30 (.133) funk, but has gone 21-for-51 (.412) since. Charlotte's Leury Garcia entered today sharing the IL's longest active on-base streak with Refsnyder. The IL's only better on-base streak this season, a 25-gamer, was set by Indy's Josh Bell from April 10-May 7.
DUAL THREAT: Gary Sanchez shares the IL lead in doubles and ranks second with 17 extra-base hits: 11-2B, 1-3B, 5HR. A .175 bat after his first 10 games, he has since gone 23-for-67 with 11 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs in 16 games played, slashing .343/.380/.597/.977. His 20 RBIs rank second on the squad and tie him for fifth in the circuit. When he has been behind the plate, opposing base stealers have been caught eight times in 16 attempts for the IL's second-best caught-stealing percentage at .500. Sanchez has hit safely in eight straight games with multiple knocks in four of those affairs. During his hit streak he has gone 14-for-36 with six extra-base hits (three homers) and nine RBIs while slashing .389/.405/.722/1.128.
GUILTY AS CHARGED: Aaron Judge drove in SWB's lone run with a fifth-inning two-out double. He ranks among the IL's best in homers (T-2nd, 7), RBIs (4th, 21), extra-base hits (3rd, 15) and total bases (2nd, 63). His five outfield assists pace the team and trail only Buffalo's Junior Lake (7) and Durham's Jaff Decker (6) for the IL lead. Over his last 11 games, he has five homers and 10 RBIs. Last night, he played center field for the first time this season. In 2015, he started in center for SWB five times, and moved from right to center during a game on three other occasions. Last Friday he played left field for the first time as a pro. All of his other pro games have come in right or as the DH.
I'M JUST A CAVEMAN: Yesterday, the New York Yankees made several changes to the RailRiders' roster. Outfielder Slade Heathcott (retro to May 10) and right-hander Kyle Haynes hit the DL. SWB also received outfielder Jake Cave from Double-A Trenton. In his first SWB outing of 2016, Cave tripled to set up Judge's run-scoring double and lined out twice as the leadoff man. He also made an impressive diving backhanded grab of a Mike Miller liner in the visiting fifth.
OFF THE RAILS: Richard Bleier (1-1) tossed seven innings for a second straight start...The two runs he allowed came on Blake Swihart's first homer since he went yard twice at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 29, 2015...It marked the first homer allowed by Bleier to an IL foe since his lone appearance with Buffalo on April 10, 2014...That also came against Pawtucket, a solo shot by Bryce Brentz...In losing the last two games of the series, the RailRiders have scored one run on 17 hits and six walks....During that span, SWB has gone 1-for-18 with RISP, leaving 20 on base...Chris Parmelee began 2016 in a 2-for-26 (.077) funk with 0XBH, 1RBI, 10K...He has since gone 22-for-66, 8XBH, 7RBI, 9BB, 13R over 18 games, slashing .333/.413/.515/.928...Adonis Garcia set the RailRiders era record with a 21-game hit streak from July 17-Aug. 30, 2014 that tied for the longest in the IL that season...Red Barons shortstop Pablo Ozuna set the overall SWB mark, a 27-gamer from July 27-Aug. 24, 2004...The RailRiders have played error-free ball in a season-high-tying seven straight games...Only Columbus has made fewer mistakes (15) or owns a better fielding percentage (.987) than SWB (18, .985).
