Charlotte Bats Batter Tides

May 12, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Charlotte Knights jumped out to an early lead and pounded out 19 hits as they rolled to a 12-3 win over the Tides Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park.

The Knights got to Norfolk starter Jason Gunkel (0-2) in the first inning, sending nine men to the plate as they took an early 4-0 lead. Charlotte extended its lead to 6-0 in the second inning, then chased Gunkel from the contest with three more runs in the fourth.

Gunkel, who was making his Harbor Park debut, yielded nine runs on a career-high 11 hits over three-plus innings of work. He walked two without striking out a batter while throwing 42 of his 67 pitches for strikes.

Christian Walker paced Norfolk's offense with two hits, including an RBI single in the seventh inning. Walker now has 24 runs batted in this season, tied with Toledo's Steven Moya for the most in the International League.

Garabez Rosa singled in the contest to extend his hitting streak to eight games, the longest by a Tides player this season. Rosa, who has batted .313 (10-32) over that eight-game span, ranks fourth among Orioles minor leaguers with a .309 average this season.

L.J. Hoes had two hits in the contest and also worked a scoreless ninth inning from the mound in his first professional pitching appearance. He was the first Norfolk position player to take the mound since Sharlon Schoop did so during the 2015 season.

Chad Beck (3-2) earned the win with six scoreless innings as the Knights completed a five-game series sweep.

The Tides welcome the Buffalo Bisons and former manager Gary Allenson to Harbor Park on Friday for the start of a three-game series. Andy Oliver (0-0, 1.37) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Roberto Hernandez (1-1, 1.84), with first pitch set for 7:05.
