GARY, Ind. - Stephen Hiscock delivered his 12th quality outing of the season as the RailCats finished the regular season with a win, defeating the Laredo Lemurs 5-3 on Monday night. The RailCats finished 50-50, in third place in the American Association Central. They fell short of the playoffs for the second straight year.
The RailCats jumped ahead in the first inning. Adam Klein led off with a single to center and Mike Massaro brought him home with a triple. It was Massaro's league-leading 12th triple of the year and 35th of his RailCats' career, the most all-time. Ryan Babineau hit an RBI groundout to score Massaro and make it 2-0. Massaro's run set a single-season club record with 76 runs on the year, surpassing Klein's 75 runs in 2011.
The 'Cats added on in the fourth inning, hitting four consecutive singles, including RBI by David Cooper and Klein to take a 4-0 lead.
Laredo broke through in the fifth inning against RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock, scoring an unearned run on a bases-loaded hit batsmen. Uriak Marquez belted a two-run homer in the sixth to cut the RailCats' lead to 4-3.
Hiscock (6-6) went seven innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits. He struck out six Laredo batters and walked just one. Marco Gonzalez pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save.
Gary added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and two out, Adam Klein drew his league-leding 82nd walk of the season, scoring Trevor Willis to give the 'Cats a 5-3 edge. Klein finished 4-for-4 on the night with a run and two RBI.
RailCats manager Greg Tagert kept his streak intact of never finishing a season below .500. His teams have had a record of .500 or above in each of his 17 seasons as a manager. The RailCats finished 34-22 after falling to a season-worst 16-28 entering play on July 4.
