WORCESTER, Mass. - Mike Rohde's infield single broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning to lead the RailCats to a 2-0 shutout win over the Tornadoes on Sunday afternoon. The RailCats took three out of four in the series and have won three straight games for the first time this season.
RailCats starter Stephen Hiscock and Tornadoes starter Chris Torres each did their part to turn the game into a pitcher's duel. Neither factored in the decision, as Hiscock threw six scoreless frames and allowed six hits while walking one and striking out four. Torres held the 'Cats offense to three hits in 6 2/3 innings in his first career start.
The 'Cats broke through in the eighth inning against Worcester reliever Kyle Regnault. David Cooper and Adam Klein started the inning with back-to-back singles and Mike Massaro bunted them over to second and third. Brian Kolb walked to load the bases with two out, and Rohde followed with a grounder between first and second base. The first baseman Alex Nunez slipped on his way to the ball, allowing Rohde to reach and Cooper to score the go-ahead run. Ryan Babineau followed with a bases-loaded walk to give the RailCats a 2-0 lead.
Five relievers combined with Hiscock on the shutout, as Estevan Uriegas (1-0) struck out the final batter of the seventh inning for the victory. Marshall Schuler retired the final four batters of the game, striking out two, to pick up his first save as a RailCat. It was the RailCats third shutout win of the season. Hiscock lowered his ERA to 2.46 and now has six quality starts in his last seven outings.
The RailCats will travel North of the border to start a three-game series at Quebec on Monday night at 6:05 Central Time. Rookie Jon Gulberansen (0-0, 2.46) will make his second start for the 'Cats.
