Fish Fall out of First Place
July 15, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
The Winnipeg Goldeyes just couldn't get the bats going on Sunday afternoon and as a result, the Fish lost their second straight game.
A three-run home run by big Saints DH Ole Sheldon off Goldeyes starter Chris Salamida in the fifth inning was the difference in the ball game as the St. Paul Saints came back from a 3-0 deficit and beat the Goldeyes 6-3 in front of 4,559 cold, wet spectators at Shaw Park. With the win, the Saints earned a split in the four-game series.
In a game that was delayed twice by rain - 33 minutes at the start and 59 minutes in the fifth -- the Goldeyes could muster only five hits. As a result, Winnipeg finished its 12-game homestand with a record of 6-6 and fell into second place in the American Association's North Division, one full game back of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
It's the first time in 53 days that the Goldeyes have been out of first place. Fargo won its 12th straight game yesterday and moved past Winnipeg into top spot in the North.
The Goldeyes opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as Price Kendall was safe on an error, Chris Roberson struck out, Jon Weber walked and Yurendell de Caster singled home Kendall. Weber scored on a throwing error by the Saints catcher and then de Caster scored on a double by Luis Alen.
But after that, the Goldeyes managed only two more hits - one in the second and one in the eighth.
St. Paul, meanwhile, scored a run in the third, four in the fifth -- including the three-run homer by Sheldon and a solo bomb by Ronnie Bourquin off Goldeyes reliever Brian Beuning -- and then added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. In the end, the Saints had 16 hits to Winnipeg's five. On the upside, Josh Mazzola singled in the ninth and has now hit safely in 12 straight games.
Saints starter Anthony Claggett (3-2, 7.23 ERA) earned the victory while Dustin Klabunde (3.38 ERA) picked up his fifth save. Salamida (2-3, 4.33 ERA) suffered the loss.
Right after the game, the Goldeyes got on the bus and headed to Lincoln, Neb., where they'll play three games against the SaltDogs. The Goldeyes don't return home until next Tuesday, July 24, when the Quebec Capitales come to Shaw Park.
Game time in Lincoln on Monday is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
