RailCats Offense Explodes in 16-7 Victory

Gary, IND - The RailCats scored six runs in the second inning and seven in the sixth on their way to a 16-7 win over Sioux Falls on Monday night in the series opener. The win ended a three-game losing streak and was the "˜Cats first home victory of the season.

In the second, Chris Carrara hit a three-run double, Mike Massaro a two-run triple and Rico Washington an RBI single to make it 6-0. Sioux Falls answered with three in the top of the third, but Carrara added an RBI in the bottom of the third on a sac fly2.

The Pheasants plated two more runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-5. In the bottom of the fifth, Massaro hit his second triple of the game to knock in a run and Mike Coles hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 9-5.

The sixth inning was the RailCats biggest inning of the season, as they unloaded for seven runs on six hits. Craig Maddox hit an RBI single and Mike Rohde brought him home with a triple. Sean Smith hit an RBI double, Massaro a two-run single and Coles a two-run double. By the time the smoke cleared, the RailCats had a 16-5 lead.

The three triples by the RailCats was a single-game franchise record. All nine hitters in the RailCats lineup recorded a hit and everyone but Coles scored a run. The win was number 799 for Manager Greg Tagert in his career.

Andrew Johnston (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will start on Tuesday in the second game of the series and lefty Mitchell Clegg (0-0, 6.00) will take the bump for the Pheasants. First pitch is 11:10 a.m.
