Gary, Ind. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants suffered a 16-7 loss to the Gary SouthShore RailCats to open a three-game series on Monday night at the U.S. Steel Yard.

The RailCats roughed up Pheasants starter Andrew Liebel (0-3) for six runs in the second inning and never trailed. Chris Carrara's bases-clearing double brought home three to start a rally that saw 10 men come to the plate.

Liebel exited in the third after his fourth walk, allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Every RailCat batter had at least one hit. Mike Massaro led the effort with four hits and five RBI, including two triples.

The Pheasants tried to make a game of it, scoring five runs in the third and fourth inning off RailCats starter Morgan Coombs. Cory Morales doubled home two runs in the third and then scored one batter later on a dropped fly ball. Trevor Lawhorn had a run-scoring single in the fourth and Jonny Kaplan added a sacrifice fly.

But the RailCats added two more runs in the fifth and seven runs in the sixth, stretching the lead to 16-5.

After Coombs left in the fourth, Chris Allen (2-0) earned the victory in relief. Will Krout pitched the final three innings for his fourth save.

Jonny Kaplan contributed a seventh-inning solo home run, and Jared Bolden had an RBI single in the ninth. Both extended their season-opening hitting streaks to 10 games.

Game two of the three-game series is at 11:10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 29, in Gary. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
