Rage Capture Hard-Earned Point on the Road

November 8, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Bossier City, La. - Colt King and Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn both scored and Marty Magers made 29 saves as the Rocky Mountain Rage lost to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in at shootout at the CenturyTel Center, 3-2.

For only the third time in nine games this season, the Rage scored the first goal of the game. Just after failing to convert on a three-on-two, Aaron Davis kept the puck alive behind the net before centering to King, who hammered a one-timer top shelf for his second of the year at 4:47 of the opening period.

Rocky Mountain carried the lead into the second and proceeded to keep the 1-0 advantage intact by weathering three consecutive Bossier-Shreveport power plays at the beginning of the frame. The Rage then built a 2-0 edge when Nathan O'Nabigon bull-dogged his way in front off the end boards, allowing Versteeg-Lytwyn to jam home his second of the season at 10:48.

The Mudbugs cut the lead in half in the waning moments of the period, converting just after a power play expired to pull within 2-1 after Tyrel Lucas deflected a shot from the point past Magers at 19:49.

In the third, Bossier-Shreveport finally converted with its top-ranked power play to draw even. David Pszenyczny took a feed from Joe Blaznek and deadlocked the game at two at 8:44.

The clubs remained tied at two through the end of regulation before each found themselves in overtime for the first time this season. Both teams failed to convert on one power play apiece during the extra session, and they headed to the shootout.

Magers stopped the first two Bossier-Shreveport shooters before allowing three straight tallies. Brent Cullaton and Scott Wray lit the lamp for Rocky Mountain, setting the stage for Simon Watson, who had to score to force a sixth round in the tie-breaker. Watson beat Mudbugs goaltender Jon Horrell to the forehand but found the post instead of the back of the net, and Bossier-Shreveport skated away with the extra point.

The Rage did pick up their first point of the season on the road, though, moving to 1-7-1 on the year, remaining in fourth place in the Northwest Division with three points overall.

The club concludes its current four-game road trip next weekend against the New Mexico Scorpions and Odessa Jackalopes. Rocky Mountain then returns to Broomfield Event Center on Nov. 21 and 22 at 7:05 p.m. against the Mudbugs and Rapid City Rush, respectively.
