Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Central Hockey League's Arizona Sundogs and Corpus Christi IceRays skated in the second game of a weekend series Saturday night at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. For the second-straight night, the two clubs would need more than 60 minutes to decide a winner. Goaltender Marco Emond backstopped Arizona to its second shootout win of the season, stopping 31 of 33 shots and three of six skaters in the shootout in the 3-2 win. Mark Kolanos tallied the eventual game-winner in the sixth and final round of the shootout for his fifth goal of the season.
Arizona carried a one-goal lead into the first intermission Saturday night after Tyler Liebel tallied his club's first power play goal in its last 18 chances. The Sundogs had been unable to capitalize on the power play in 229:23 of play dating back to their 6-3 win over Amarillo on Friday, Oct. 31. Liebel beat IceRays netminder Kris Tebbs 8:17 into the period for his first of the year after being held pointless in his first six contests this season. Derek Legault and Martin Gascon were credited with assists on the power play marker. The Sundogs' penalty kill held Corpus Christi scoreless on 2:58 of 5-on-3 power play time helping their club to the early 1-0 advantage.
In the middle frame, the IceRays would convert on the man advantage to pull even with Arizona at the period's 7:39 mark. While below the near circle, Mike Zbriger snuck a shot near post past Emond for his seventh goal of the season from Justin Quenneville and John Adams. After the final buzzer to close out the second, IceRays forward Adam Powell left his bench to join a scuffle behind the Sundogs net and was handed a two-minute delay of game bench minor to start the third period.
Skating four-on-four to start the third period after Powell's bench minor at the close of the second proved costly for the IceRays as Gascon skated down the far boards off the face-off and sent a low shot far post past Tebbs for his second point of the game. A.J. MacLean and Chris Bartolone assisted on the goal just 15 seconds into the period. At the 10:14 mark, a Sundogs turnover allowed Zbriger to skate in 1-on-0 but Emond stood tall in net, denying the chance and keeping his club up 2-1. Referee Timm Walsh whistled Joel Irving for holding with 3:11 to play in regulation and Corpus Christi took advantage to force overtime. Adams sent a shot from the point on net and the puck found its way past a screened Emond with one second remaining on the power play to force overtime. Jason Krischuk and John McNabb assisted on the late equalizer.
Each team received a one-minute man advantage in the overtime session but both goalies turned aside every shot they faced, sending the game to a shootout. Zbriger, McNabb and Chris Richards all scored for the IceRays in the shootout. The Sundogs' Kolanos beat Tebbs five-hole in the sixth round to give his club an advantage and Emond capped of his strong play in net, stopping Adams attempt for the 3-2 victory. Karl Sellan, Legault and Kyle Hood also scored for Arizona in the shootout.
Emond improved to 4-3-0 while Tebbs fell to 3-2-1 on the year stopping 24 of 26 shots in the loss. Arizona finished 1-for-5 on the power play while holding Corpus Christi to two goals on 12 man advantage opportunities.
With the win, Arizona climbs to 4-5-1 and moves into a tie for second place in the Southwest Division with rival the New Mexico Scorpions. The two teams are slated to face one and other on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Game time is set for 7:05pm. Tickets are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online at www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office. Fans can receive three dollars off tickets to Tuesday's game as a result of the Sundogs 3-2 win over Corpus Christi Saturday night.
