Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Battle Creek, MI-. Greg Maisto threw six strong innings and left with the lead, but the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters couldn't hold on and fell to the Battle Creek Bombers Monday night, 7-5. The loss was the seventh in the last eight ballgames and was the second straight game against Battle Creek that the Rafters allowed a lead to slip away in the bottom of the eighth inning. The loss dropped the Rafters to 4-9 on the season, while also losing their first three contests against Battle Creek. Wisconsin Rapids is now 2-6 in games decided by two runs this season.
The Rafters jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Donnie Dewees led the top of the first inning off with a walk. Dewees would score on an RBI single by Omaha, Neb. native, Michael Herman, giving the Rafters an early lead, 1-0 in the first.
The lead would grow in the second as the Rafters sent six men to the plate while the seven-eight-and-nine hole hitters all reached base. Texas catcher, Jeremy Montalbano, recorded his first extra-base hit of the season, while Marcus Wheeler scored a run and singled up the middle marking the 10th consecutive game that Wheeler has reached base. The Rafters would add three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits to take a 4-0 lead over the Bombers.
As light rain fell, the Bombers offense ignited in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jackson Glines led off with a solo home run and Joe Serrano, appearing in his first game with Battle Creek, scored a run after reaching base, following being struck by a pitch. Before the evening was over, the Rafters would hit five batters while walking six throughout the evening. The Bombers scored four of their seven runs off runners that reached by a free pass or on an error.
While the pitching sputtered, the Rafters defense kept them in the game as they combined to turn three double plays, including an inning ending 6-4-3 double play that stranded two runners on base in the seventh and allowed the Rafters to lead the game heading to eighth, 5-4.
The Bombers would tag Rafter relief pitcher, Trevor Koehn, for three runs in the eighth after Koehn issued two walks in the inning and an RBI singly by Serrano that just went by the diving glove of Rafter second basemen, Michael Jurgella.
The Rafters and Bombers will continue their series tomorrow when the visit C.O. Brown Stadium for the final game of the series at 7:05 p.m. Fans can listen to tomorrows broadcast on 1320 AM WFHR.
