Madison Mallards News Release
Mequon, WI - June 10, 2013. Madison Mallards (7-5) shortstop Mike Reuvekamp (California) drove in pinch runner Mitch Elliott (Xavier) with an RBI single in the top of the 11th Monday night against the Lakeshore Chinooks (7-6) to give the Mallards their first three-game winning streak of the season.
Tony Cheky (Michigan State) led off the inning with a double to the right field gap but injured his wrist sliding into second. Sam Forkert (Marian) came on in the bottom of the inning and allowed a walk and a hit but recorded his second save of the season.
Catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois), who was making his Mallards debut, had an RBI double in the top of the tenth, but Mallards reliever Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan) couldn't close things out, as he allowed Sawyer Polen (Kent State) to knock in Chris Manning (Valparaiso) in the next half inning.
Goldstein broke another tie in the eighth with an RBI single that drove in Drew Weeks (North Florida) that gave the Mallards a 3-2 lead, but Forrest Chadwick (Southern Maine) hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth off of Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) to send it to extras.
The Chinooks opened with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third off of Mallards starter Greg Welsh (Penn State), but the Mallards tied it in the top of the fifth.
Welsh went five innings and allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits while striking out two and walking two. Cam Verbeke (Illinois State) and May each pitched two innings. Verbeke didn't allow a hit and struck out two while May allowed two hits and walked one.
Karch Kowalczyk (Valparaiso) was tagged with the loss and pitched the 10th and 11th innings for the Chinooks. He allowed two runs on five hits. Chinooks starter Alex Young (TCU) allowed five hits and two runs in five innings.
Reuvekamp (3-for-6 with a run and an RBI) and Goldstein (2-for-4 with an RBI) led the Mallards offensively. Weeks - who had five RBIs on Sunday against Eau Claire - also had multiple hits and went 2-for-6 with a run scored. Cheky also went 3-for-6 before leaving with the injury.
Chinooks third baseman Brant Valach (Eastern Illinois) led the team offensively with two RBIs and went 1-for-5.
The Mallards conclude their four-game road trip with another game against the Chinooks Tuesday at 6:35 pm. They return home Wednesday for a 7:05 pm game against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. The BOCA Burger Vegetarian Appreciation Night and the Madison Knitters Guild Stitch and Pitch Night will both be held that night. The Meriter Hand Sanitizer Giveaway will also take place.
