Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - A trio of players wearing a Rochester Honkers uniform for the first time led the Honkers to a 4-3 win over the St. Cloud Rox on Monday, June 10 at Mayo Field.
Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) doubled off of the batter's eye in center field in his first at-bat as a Honker in the bottom of the first inning. He scored on a groundball from Tyler Baker (Wichita State) to give Rochester an early 1-0 lead. Michael Pomeroy (Grand Canyon University) launched a homerun over the right field fence in his first at-bat in a Honkers uniform to make the lead 2-0 after two innings. Pomeroy finished the game going 2-for-4 with a homerun and a single.
Baker, also playing in his first game for the Honkers, added a second RBI in the third inning when he pulled a double down the right field line to score Alex Greer (Iowa Western) and Rochester held a 3-0 lead after three innings. Greer and Baker each collected a pair of hits on the night.
Rochester starter Derrick Hadley (Sam Houston State) began his first start of the season with five shutout innings. He allowed extra base hits to Chris Paul, Adam, Martin, and Christian Helsel in the sixth inning and St. Cloud cut its deficit to two runs at 3-2 after five and a half innings. Hadley allowed two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings to earn his first win (1-0) of the season.
Rochester added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Burgess delivered a sacrifice fly to the left-center field warning track to score Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii.) Hanawahine drew a walk, stole second base, and advanced to third on an error to set up the sacrifice fly. Burgess went 1-for-3 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored. He was also robbed of a homerun by Rox left fielder Devin Pearson in the fifth inning.
Jordan Milbrath (Augustana College) earned his first save of the season as he pitched 3.1 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run and just one hit. Jason Hoppe took the loss (0-1) for St. Cloud. He allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings of work.
Rochester (6-7) will conclude a six-game home stand on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:05 p.m. when the Waterloo Bucks (8-4) come to town. Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) is scheduled to make the start for Rochester. Kyle Kramp (Butler) is slated to start for the Bucks. The Honkers will travel to Waterloo for games on Wednesday and Thursday before beginning a four-game home stand with Thunder Bay and Alexandria.
