Chucks Force Extra Innings, Fall to Bullfrogs

GREEN BAY - The Wisconsin Woodchucks were able to overcome a three-run eighth inning deficit to force extra innings against the Green Bay Bullfrogs, but the Bullfrogs would walk-off on the Woodchucks in the tenth by a score of 6-5.

The Woodchucks would trail by a score of 5-2 heading into the top of the eighth. With two outs in the inning, the "˜Chucks mounted their rally. Jake Peter was on third and Jordan Devencinzi on third for Brandon Krieg. Krieg hit a grounder off of third baseman Tripp Martin that deflected over to second base, scoring both runners and cutting the lead to a run. Two batters later, Tyler Stieb would come through with a huge single to bring Krieg home and tie the ballgame at five runs apiece.

That would send the game to extras for the second consecutive night. After Jonathan Tripp shut down the Woodchucks in the top of the tenth, the Bullfrogs broke through in the tenth. Cabe Reiten doubled in front of a base-hit by Kelly Norris-Jones to score the winning run, making the Bullfrogs the walk-off winners.

Bullfrog starter Derek Callahan would excel against the "˜Chucks in his six innings of work. Callahan worked six innings, allowing eight hits but only two runs while walking none and striking out four.

Green Bay would take an early lead in the bottom of the first inning to start the scoring. With two on and one out, Tripp Martin pulled a deep fly ball down the left field line that snuck around the foul pole for a three-run home run off of Woodchuck starter Matt Thomas.

The Woodchucks would counter the three-run frame with a two-spot of their own in the second. After a Garrett Rucker single, Brandon Krieg would triple into the right-field corner to score Rucker. Krieg would score two batters later when Tyler Stieb singled to center to cut the Bullfrog lead to a run.

The score would remain at 3-2 until the fifth when the Bullfrogs would flash their power again. After a lead-off single by Jack Parenty, Cabe Reiten got a hold of a Thomas fast-ball and hit his first home run of the season to left to make it 5-2 in favor of the Bullfrogs. Those two home runs would be the only mistakes for Thomas as he went six innings, allowing the five runs, all via the long ball.

Jackson Lowery would receive the tough-luck loss for the Woodchucks. Lowery retired the first ten batters he faced out of the bullpen before the Reiten double. Lowery would fall to 1-1 on the season.

The Woodchucks and Bullfrogs will take their series to Wausau tomorrow for a double-header. Game one will start at 5:35 as a continuation of their opening night game against Green Bay that was postponed due to rain. Play will resume with the Woodchucks leading 1-0 in the fourth. Game two will begin 25 minutes after the conclusion of game one and last seven innings.
