Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Green Bay, WI - June 26, 2012 - The Witter Field magic was absent Tuesday, as the Rafters lost at home to Green Bay 6-2. The Rafters stranded 10 base runners, had a runner in every inning, and loaded the bases in the ninth, but Wisconsin Rapids could not score after the first.
Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) knocked in two with a double to give the Rafters a 2-0 lead after one. With a lead, lefty starter Nestor Bautista (SO, Ball State Univ.) gave up just one hit in the second. It was a home run, however, which tied the game at two a piece. He also walked four in the inning, faced all nine batters in the Green Bay order, allowed three runs, and threw 35 pitches. By Northwoods League rule, because Bautista had thrown 35 pitches in the inning, he could not return to face the Bullfrogs in the third.
The combination of three Rafters relievers allowed three more over the next seven innings, but Green Bay already had the runs they needed.
Bullfrogs starting pitcher Bryce Bellin locked down the Rafters after the first. The right-hander came in having allowed only two runs all year, and although he gave up two in the first to match that total, he was poised the rest of the evening. Wisconsin Rapids had a baserunner in every inning against him, but he worked out of each jam methodically and successfully.
Pat Kelly had a good night offensively, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Kenny Towns (FR, Univ. of Virginia), pitching 2.2 of scoreless relief, was solid as well, striking out five Green Bay swingers.
Bautista (1-1) took his first loss of the year, getting by far his smallest run support of the season. The previous low for the Rafters offense with the Ball State sophomore on the mound was five runs. Bellin improved to 2-2 with the win, and closer Will Landshelft picked up his third save, getting out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in ninth.
The Rafters are now 0-4 against Green Bay this season. The two face-off once more in the first half, playing Wednesday night in Wisconsin Rapids where the Inflatamaniacs, presented by Paper City Savings, will perform for the Witter faithful. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters are members of the 16-team summer collegiate Northwoods League. The Rafters will play a 70 game schedule with 35 home games in 2012. Available quantities of all promotional giveaways will vary from event to event and will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
