Lumbermen Only Produce Two Hits, Still Win 3-2 Over Chinooks

LA CROSSE, WIS. - The La Crosse Loggers made a late rally for the second night in a row, this time manufacturing just enough runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead for good, 3-2, against the Lakeshore Chinooks. Lakeshore outhit La Crosse 12 hits to 2, but the 2,573 fans in attendance at Copeland Park saw the Loggers put three runs across in one inning after only having three base runners through six innings.

Lakeshore was first to strike. German Reyes led off the second inning with a double down the third-base line. He would later be driven in by Forrest Chadwick on a line drive through the left side.

The Chinooks would score again in the fourth inning, again leading the inning off with a double. This time Keaton Steele bounced one past Brandon Bednar at third into the left field corner. After being moved over on a bunt, Steele was driven in by a Matt Morse liner up the middle.

Carson Beauchaine took the mound for Lakeshore and needed only 61 pitches to get through five innings, allowing one hit and a walk with two strikeouts. Tyler Thicke then relieved him in the sixth and struck out the first two batters he faced before walking Boomer Collins (Dallas Baptist), who was then stranded on base when Joe Meggs (Washington) flew out to center.

The seventh inning was a different story for Thicke. Tyler Kuresa (UC Santa Barbara) led off with a check-swing single down the third-base line and beat out the throw. Rich Prigatano (Long Beach State) and Brenden Farney (California) followed with consecutive walks on full counts to load the bases.

Joe Greenfield then came into the game for the Chinooks to face Matt Chapman (Cal State Fullerton), who hit a fielder's choice to third base, scoring Kuresa and advancing Prigatano and Farney. Austin Bailey (San Diego) then hit a ground ball to the first baseman, who decided to come home with the throw, but was too late to get Prigatano before he crossed home plate. The Loggers then called for a squeeze play, with Brandon Bednar (Florida Gulf Coast) laying down a bunt to the first-base side of the mound, scoring Farney and gaining what would be the winning run.

The Loggers had the chance to take the lead due to Zach Wright (Washington) locking the Chinooks offense down starting in the fifth inning. Wright spread five hits out over four innings, with a walk, without allowing a run.

Jonathan Van Eaton entered the final frame and set down the first two Chinooks. After walking Ryan Krill, Van Eaton picked up his third save in five days when Ryan Ussery flied out to center field.

Zach Wright moved to 1-0 for the season and Tyler Thicke lost his first game of the year (0-1). Van Eaton now has six saves for the season.

The win tonight keeps the Loggers three-game lead in the South Division safe, with Green Bay beating the Wisconsin Rafters for the second straight night. The rubber match will be played tomorrow night between the Loggers (20-7) and Chinooks (13-14), with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Copeland Park. Following tomorrow's series finale, La Crosse will welcome the Mallards for a home-and-home series on Thursday.
