Rafters Capture Record 25th Win

August 6, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release

Wausau, WI - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (9-21, 25-39 overall) won their 25th game of the season Monday at Witter Field. The 2012 club has won more than any team in the franchise's three-year history, smashing the first place and 2nd half South Division champion Wisconsin Woodchucks (25-4, 42-22 overall) with an 11-1 drubbing. 1,775 fans witnessed the milestone for the club.

Every Rafters starter got a hit, eight of them scored a run, and five different players knocked in runs in the blowout. Wisconsin Rapids scored runs in each of the first five innings and six of their eight half innings at the plate on their way to their largest margin of victory on the season in their historic win.

Wisconsin Rapids scored a run in the first, second, and third, before pulling away with a four-run fourth. The Rafters clubbed three doubles in the big inning, including RBI-doubles from Jordan Dreiling (JR, Univ. of Kansas) and Brandon Downes (FR, Univ. of Virginia) to take a 7-1 lead after four.

That was more than enough for Bo Henning (SO, Sacramento City College). In his final game with Wisconsin Rapids, the right-hander fired six masterful innings of one-run baseball. The only run against him scored in the fourth when he hit a batter who later scored on a wild pitch. He shut down the dangerous left-handed batters Eric Filia-Snyder and Brendon Hayden for a combined 0-for-6 from the plate.

All-in-all, Henning allowed just the one run on only four hits. He walked only one and fanned a season-high eleven batters. The eleven was the most by a Rafters starter this season since opening night when Tommy Organ struck out the same number in a 3.1 inning loss to the La Crosse Loggers. Henning struck out back-to-back Woodchucks four times Monday. He was honored with Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night, the second straight night a Rafters' hurler earned the title (Augey Bill, 8/6).

The Woodchucks, fresh off a walk-off win to clinch the 2nd half division title on Sunday, mustered only five hits off of Rafters pitching. Ronnie Muck (SO, Univ. of Illinois) and JP Feyereisen (FR, UW-Stevens Point) threw three scoreless innings in relief to finish the job.

The win ends the Woodchucks six-game winning streak and splits the season series between the two clubs at 5-5. The Rafters have won two-of-three after falling in seven consecutive games.

With six games left, Wisconsin Rapids embarks on their final road trip of the season. Tuesday, they begin a three-game set at C.O. Brown Stadium in Battle Creek to take on the Bombers (9-20, 23-41 overall). Ben Heller (4-3, 4.50 ERA) takes the ball for Wisconsin Rapids. First pitch from Michigan is scheduled for 7:05 pm EDT (6:05 CDT).
