Beetles victorious over Stingers

Alexandria, MN - With six games remaining in the 2012 Northwoods League regular season, the Alexandria Beetles (30-34, 17-12) pulled within a single game of the first place Willmar Stingers (38-26, 18-11), scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and leading the rest of the way in a 10-7 victory over the Stingers at Knute Nelson.

For the second consecutive day, the Beetles went down in the first inning when Willmar scored a pair of runs off winner Scott Sanderson who hit a pair, walked one and allowed an infield single in the inning.

It took all of three batters for Alexandria to tie the ballgame in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff single by Matt Lowenstein, Ben Moore hit his 14th homerun of the summer for RBIs 75 and 76 leveling the ballgame 2-2.

Alexandria took its first lead of in the third with three singles and two runs. Josh Carpenter, Tanner Vavra, and Moore all delivered singles, the second two for RBIs, and the Beetles led 4-2 a third of the way through the ballgame.

The red-hot Carpenter singled home Dallas Hannah in the fourth inning as Alexandria built a 5-2 lead but the Stingers came back to tie with a big fifth inning off Scott Sanderson. Forrestt Allday and Max Kuhn walked to lead off the inning and RBI hits from Mitch Rowan and Michael Suchy, combined with a throwing error, led to three Stinger runs.

But the best hitting team in the Northwoods League, at a staggering .307, bounced right back with a four spot in the bottom of the fifth behind four hits in the inning. RBIs came from Matt Lowenstein, who raised his batting average back above .400 with a 3-4 performance, and the leading hitter in the Northwoods League, Vavra, who drove in two with a laced triple down the right field line. The Beetles took the lead at 9-5 and never trailed again.

Caleb DeLee entered in the sixth inning and delivered his best outing of the summer, a scintillating 3.1 inning outing in which he struck out four and allowed just two hits, both coming in the ninth inning.

Vavra drove in his fourth run of the ballgame in the seventh inning to give Alexandria its largest lead of the ballgame at 10-5 before the Stingers, on a leadoff double by Allday and homerun from Max Kuhn, struck for the final two runs of the game.

Anthony Bazzani entered for the final two outs of the ballgame to earn his Northwoods-leading 15th save of the summer.
