Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WISCONSIN RAPIDS - The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters scored at least one run in each of the first five innings against the Wisconsin Woodchucks as they coasted to an 11-1 victory one day after the Woodchucks clinched a playoff spot by winning the Northwoods League South second half championship.
The Rafters would get on the board first as they brought across a two-out run against Woodchuck starter Ben Burke in the first inning. After Brandon Hohl stole second base, Brandon Downes lined a ball towards right field that scored Hohl, making it a 1-0 Rafter lead.
The Rafters would double their lead in the second inning without the benefit of a base hit. Josh Cyr walked to lead off the inning and went to second on an error by shortstop Mike Bernal. Cyr later advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kenny Towns and later scored on a wild pitch by Ben Burke making it a 2-0 Rafter lead.
After the Woodchucks were held scoreless again in the top of the third, the Rafters added onto their lead. Hohl and Pat Kelly had back-to-back one-out singles, and Hohl would later score on a single by Josh Cyr to make it a 3-0 lead.
The "ËChucks would finally break through against Rafter starter Bo Henning in the top of the fourth. Joe Serrano was hit by a pitch to lead the frame off. After a Madison Carter single, Serrano went to third on a fielder's choice hit into by Jack Fischer. Serrano would score later in the inning on a wild pitch by Henning to cut the Rafters' lead to 3-1.
After scoring one run in each of the first three innings, the Rafters' offense would put up a crooked number in the fourth. The Rafters scored four runs in the inning on four hits, including doubles by Nicholas Ammirati and Jordan Dreiling, as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead and chased Burke from the ballgame.
The Rafters would tack on one more in the fifth off of Wausau native Ryan Zweck. Kenny Towns reached on a lead-off single and would later score on a throwing error by Mike Bernal to make it 8-1.
Cyr would come through again for the Rafters in the eighth with his fifth home run of the season, but the Rafters would not need it as they smothered the Woodchucks 11-1. The Woodchucks sit on 42 victories this season, which is tied for the franchise record set in 2010.
The Woodchucks will head down to La Crosse tomorrow to take on the Loggers at 7:05 at the Lumberyard.
