Wisconsin Rapids Rafters News Release
Green Bay, WI - Sometimes the seventh time is the charm. In the seventh meeting between the two teams, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters finally came away as victors against the Green Bay Bullfrogs. In a ninth inning rally, the Rafters scored two in the ninth to win 7-6 at Joannes Stadium.
Cole Webb (SO, Valparaiso Univ.) pitched five innings in his first start since his worst outing of the season. He wasn't perfect, allowing five runs, but he fought through fifteen outs and tossed a scoreless fifth to finish his night.
Before he left, though, the Rafters had fought back. Down 5-0 to start the fifth, Wisconsin Rapids batted ten, scoring five runs on five hits. The top four batters in the order, Alex Bacon (SO, Univ. of North Florida), Jordan Dreiling (JR, Univ. of Kansas), Brandon Downes (FR, Univ. of Virginia), and Pat Kelly (FR, Univ. of Nebraska) all knocked in runs to help tie the game.
Reliever Kenny Townes (FR, Univ. of Virginia) allowed a run in the sixth though when Brooks Orton, once again, hurt the Rafters, knocking in Alex Abrams to make it 6-5 Green Bay. David Armendariz threw 2.1 scoreless frames and DJ Slaton tossed another, and the Rafters went to the ninth down a run.
Brandon Downes ripped a one-out single in the ninth to get the Rafters started. The right-fielder went two-for-five with an RBI. Sean Godrey (SO, Ball State Univ.), the team's leader in steals, came on to run for him, representing the tying run. He stole second, but was called back to first on a controversial batter's interference call, and Kelly was out number two. Brandon Hohl (Univ. of Illinois) walked.
Austin Neary (FR, Western Carolina Univ.), who was 0-for-4 on the night, ripped a double to left-center to score them both and give the Rafters their first lead at 7-6. Seth Fuller (FR, Black Hawk College) threw a second scoreless inning to pick up his division-leading fifth win.
The two teams play one more time tomorrow at Joannes Stadium. Augey Bill (SO, Univ. of Arizona) starts for Wisconsin Rapids against Ben Graff, making his third start against the Rafters.
