Rox shock the Beetles
July 7, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release
Up 8-2 going to the bottom of the seventh, the Alexandria Beetles (13-24, 0-2) could not hold off the late-charging St. Cloud Rox (11-25, 2-0), who scored one in the seventh, five in the eighth and one in the ninth to shock the Beetles 9-8 for the second consecutive night.
Erik Kozel delivered the game-winning hit on a single to center scoring Chris Paul who led off the ninth with a walk off Michael Reed.
Shawn Riesgraf started for the Beetles and went 5.1 strong, allowing just one run, and Brandon Johnson, in his first appearance for Alexandria, pitched out of a first-and-third jam after Riesgraf departed in the sixth with a 3-2 lead.
Alexandria scored a pair of runs in the second after a double by Jimmy Pickens to lead off the inning. With one out, Dylan Raper grounded out to second to drive in Pickens and Robert Case delivered his first RBI of the summer with a double of his own to score Matt Beaty.
After St. Cloud halved the deficit in the bottom of the inning, the Beetles tacked on a third run in the third with Pickens driving home Fulmer who had led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch.
Again the Rox pulled within one with a single run in the fifth but Alexandria appeared to take a commanding lead in the sixth when Josh Carpenter singled in a pair of runs with two outs and was sent home two batters later on an infield single from Tanner Vavra.
The Beetles tacked on two more on a two-run homerun by Ryan Padilla, his third in as many nights, in the seventh to open their largest lead of the game.
But three walks, three hits and a hit-by-pitch in the eighth plated five runs for the Rox with Carlos Lopez providing the game-tying sacrifice fly, and after needing 10 innings for their 9-8 win in Alexandria on Thursday, the Rox needed just regulation on Friday to drop the Beetles to 0-2 in the second half.
Alexandria continues its five game road trip with three in Thunder Bay beginning at 6:05 EST on Saturday.
