Wausau Woodchucks News Release
Now striding on a two game win streak to open up the second half of the season, and looking for a three game sweep, the Wisconsin Woodchucks continued play for the third and final game of the series against the Battle Creek Bombers Saturday night at Athletic Park. The Woodchucks grabbed the early lead and never looked back, completing the three game sweep and winning 4-2 Saturday evening.
The Woodchucks struck first in Saturday night's game on a solo home run by Skyler Ewing to center field that would leave the park in a hurry. This was the first home run by Ewing that he hit off of a right-handed pitcher all season, and it was a good one in the second inning.
After Ewing's home run another run would cross in the second inning when second basemen Jake Peter grounded out to score Chevas Numata and give the Woodchucks the 2-0 lead.
The Woodchuck would collect another run by Ewing, this time in the third inning when he flied out deep enough to score Brad McKewon to suddenly make it a 3-0 game.
The Bombers would grab a run in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly to center field by Sikes Orvis, scoring Colin Willis to make it a 3-1 game.
Bombers would trim the lead to one in the fifth, with another sacrifice fly, this time to right field. That was all Chris Sujka needed to score the second run.
Unlike Thursday, and Friday night's games, Saturday night's did not include more than ten combined runs, instead the low scoring game can be credited to Woodchucks starter J.D. Davis who had ten strike outs on the night, and helped keep the Bombers under three runs.
The Woodchucks, still not comfortable with the 3-2 score in the bottom of the eighth changed the score with a Jake Peter solo home run to increase the lead back to two runs.
Jackson Lowery came in in the eighth and shut down Battle Creek allowing just one walk, one hit, and four strike outs in Saturday night's outing.
The Woodchucks would finish out the game 4-2, and complete the sweep against the Battle Creek Bombers for a 3-0 start for the second half of the season. The Woodchucks will be back in action on Monday against the Lakeshore Chinooks.
