New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
New Britain, CT---Al Quintana went 4-for-5 and hit his first Eastern League home run, a ninth inning grand slam, as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats rolled to a 12-0 win before 4,128 Thursday morning at New Britain Stadium.
Brandon Magee, Edgar Estanga and Celson Polanco combined on a four-hit shutout as the first-place Fisher Cats (16-11) earned a split of the four-game series.
New Hampshire (16-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning against New Britain starter and loser Jeff Manship (2-3). After retiring the first 11 batters in the game, David Cooper doubled. Brian Dopirak (2-for-4, RBI, 2 R) followed with an RBI single.
New Britain (12-14) had its best threat in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandon Roberts led off with a single off winning pitcher Brandon Magee (1-0). Brian Dinkelman followed with a single. Steve Tolleson bunted both runners up. After Magee intentionally walked Whit Robbins, Manager Gary Cathcart brought in LHP Edgar Estanga to face DH Erik Lis. Lis lined into a double play that ended the frame, keeping New Hampshire in front 1-0.
Magee worked 5.1 IP, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out one.
In the top of the seventh inning, Cody Haether singled, advanced to second on a single by Quintana (4-for-5, HR, 5 RBI), and both scored on a triple by Sean Shoffit (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2B, 3B) that made it 3-0. Jonathan Diaz (2-for-5, RBI, 2 2B) drove in Shoffit with a double and scored on a double by Brad Emaus (2-for-5, 2 RBI) that extended the lead to 5-0.
The Fisher Cats added a run in the eighth inning. Dopirak doubled and scored on a Quintana single off reliever Frank Mata to make it 6-0.
In the top of the ninth inning against reliever Zach Ward, New Hampshire sent ten men to the plate, scoring six more runs. Diaz doubled and scored on an Emaus single. After Dopirak walked, Adam Calderone singled home Emaus to make it 8-0. Ward walked Cody Haether and Quintana followed with a grand slam to make it 12-0. It was the first grand slam for a Fisher Cats player since Lyle Overbay on July 7, 2007.
Estanga and Polanco finished up New Hampshire's fifth team shutout of the season.
