Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Alan Quine had two goals, but the Lehigh Valley Phantoms prevailed over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, winning the contest 4-2.
Tensions were high between the teams early on, with a fight almost breaking out between Bridgeport's Harry Zolnierczyk and Lehigh Valley's Zack Stortini at the opening faceoff. Eventually, tempers boiled over and a fight did occur about two minutes into the game, with the Sound Tigers' Dyson Stevenson engaging the Phantoms Derek Mathers in a quick bout. A number of big hits followed the fight, but no penalties were assessed.
The Sound Tigers struck first off of a nice passing play between Adam Pelech and Quine. Scott Mayfield took a slap shot from the point which Lehigh Valley goaltender Anthony Stolarz had trouble corralling. Pelech was able to pick up the rebound and pass it onto Quine's tape, after which the Orleans, Ont., native fired the puck into the open mesh for the lead. The tally was Quine's 15th of the season.
The Phantoms came very close to scoring, as Jason Akeson fired a shot that rang off the post. The Sound Tigers took advantage of the Phantoms' missed opportunity, however, scoring on the next play. An excellent cross-slot pass from Zolnierczyk put the puck right onto Quine's blade, which he blasted into the cage, doubling Bridgeport's lead. The frame ended with the Sound Tigers up a pair, and up on shots 13-11.
The second period started out with the Sound Tigers applying lots of pressure on Lehigh Valley. Bridgeport kept the puck in the Phantoms' zone for nearly three minutes, but were unable to capitalize on Lehigh Valley's fatigue.
Nick Cousins would cut the lead in half around seven and a half minutes into the period. The center streaked up the wing and snapped a laser past Bridgeport goaltender Kevin Poulin for the score. The goal was Cousins' 21st of the season.
A huge hit by Lehigh Valley's Jesper Pettersson resulted in a scrum between the teams in the corner, and a pair of 10 minute misconducts to Bridgeport's Scott Mayfield and Lehigh Valley's Oliver Lauridsen in addition to a boarding minor to Pettersson. The Sound Tigers came close, but were unable to capitalize on the power play, keeping the score at 2-1. The second period ended with the Sound Tigers dominating the play, but the Phantoms scoring the only goal.
Lehigh Valley's Adam Comrie tied the game up just two and a half minutes into the third period. He fired a one-time slapshot past Poulin after a nice feed from Akeson. The goal was Comrie's fifth of the season.
The Phantoms would take the lead at 6:25 of the third period. A quick defensive turnaround resulted in a 2-on-1 for Lehigh Valley, on which Akeson fired a slapshot that deflected off Poulin's glove and into the net. The goal was the winger's 20th of the season.
Dustin Jeffrey nearly tied the game for the Sound Tigers with about two minutes remaining in the game, but Stolarz was up to the challenge, denying the point-blank opportunity. Zolnierczyk also had a glorious chance to tie the game, but he hit the underside of the crossbar with his shot.
Cousins took a delay of game penalty with 58.6 seconds remaining in the game, giving the Sound Tigers the ability to have a 6-on-4 advantage with Poulin on the bench. However, Lauridsen shot the puck into the Bridgeport net right off the faceoff, dashing the Sound Tigers' hopes.
Poulin made 21 saves in the losing effort. Stolarz made 38 saves for the victory.
The Sound Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon, March 15, as they take on the Syracuse Crunch. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
Game Notes: It was Irish Night, with the Sound Tigers wearing special jerseys in honor of St. Patrick's Day...Despite being a highly physical contest, the game only had two fighting majors issued...Quine's multi-point night was his seventh of the season.
