Monarchs Top IceCaps

March 14, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

Derek Forbort doubled his goal total for the entire season with a pair of tallies in the first frame, while Jordan Weal, Brian O'Neill and Nic Dowd each chipped in with a pair of assists as the Manchester Monarchs topped the St. John's IceCaps 4-1 at Mile One Centre on Saturday night.

JC Lipon responded with his third of the year for the IceCaps, who dropped two-of-three against the Eastern Conference-leading Monarchs. Connor Hellebuyck was pulled from the game early in the second period after allowing four goals on 18 shots, while the Monarchs' Jean-Francois Berube stood tall between the pipes for Manchester and made 24 saves to record the win.

Forbort got the opposition on the board just over six minutes into the game as he took advantage of a great passing play between Weal and O'Neill and ripped a hard, low shot that just squeezed through Hellebuyck's pads.

Forbort's second of the night came on a man advantage as he fired a quick shot from the right point that beat a screened Hellebuyck at 15:20.

Sean Backman made it 3-0 before the end of the first as he beat Hellebuyck to a rebound and shoved home his 15th of the season with under a minute to go in the period.

The IceCaps got on the board in the second period as Will O'Neill threw the puck on net from a bad angle and found Lipon in front who tucked it under Berube just 3:25 into the period.

The Monarchs kept pressing and responded less than two minutes later as a quick shot from Vincent LoVerde beat Hellebuyck short side, ending his night at 5:19 of the second period.

Peter Budaj was perfect in relief and made several key saves in the third period to hold the Monarchs scoreless in the final frame. He finished the night with 18 saves in 34:41 of playing time.

The IceCaps will now hit the road for a six-game road trip, starting with a game against the Worcester Sharks on Friday, March 20. Catch all the action with Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com, 930AM and www.ahllive.com.
