Albany Devils Stall against Syracuse Crunch

Albany Devils News Release

ALBANY, NY -- Raman Hrabarenka scored in the closing seconds during Saturday's game against the Syracuse Crunch, but it was too little, too late. Albany, riding a four-game point streak, lost to their Northeast Division rival, 2-1, at Times Union Center.

"I liked our effort in the third period," said alternate captain Tim Sestito. "I don't think we were really there in the first period and that could have cost us. Every game from here on out you need a full 60 minute effort. It's almost like playoffs."

Netminder Scott Wedgewood made 21 saves on 22 shots for Albany (27-24-5-5). At the other end, Allen York made 33 saves for Syracuse (35-17-8-0).

Jonathan Marchessault led the Crunch with a goal and an assist. He setup Carter Ashton for an empty-net goal in the final minute of play.

The Devils had their chances on the power play, but couldn't convert on seven opportunities.

"We have to move on, there's a lot of positives," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "You can say we didn't score on the power play, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort. You always think your execution could be better at times, but it wasn't for the lack of putting pucks on net."

The Crunch scored the lone man-up goal, which came on a five minute match penalty late in the second period. Marchessault scored 30 seconds into the man advantage on a one-timer through the slot.

The final two goals were produced during the last 18 seconds. Ashton scored into the empty net with 17.5 remaining.

Hrabarenka ended York's shutout bid with a point shot with just 3.6 on the clock.

"We needed to get some more shots from the point like that," Kowalsky said. "It didn't happen enough. They're a very good shot blocking team. Raman was able to get a quick release away, but it was too little too late."

Albany outshot the Crunch, 34-23.
