Norfolk Admirals News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - Mike McKenna and the Portland Pirates pitched a shutout over the Norfolk Admirals for a 2-0 win on Saturday night at the Cross Insurance Arena.
Portland rookie Henrik Samuelsson earned his 13th goal of the season 10:17 into the first period. Jordan Martinook skated into the Norfolk zone before sending it to a wide open Samuelsson on the right side. Samuelsson executed a nifty move in front of Jason LaBarbera and quickly switched the puck to his backhand, scooping it over the fallen netminder into the open net. Alexandre Bolduc got the secondary assist, giving Portland a 1-0 advantage.
The Admirals found themselves down by two just after their second-period power play expired. Following a penalty for hooking, Philip Samuelsson hit Brendan Shinnimin coming out of the box setting up a breakaway opportunity. Entering the zone on a breakaway, Shinnimin lifted the puck high glove-side on LaBarbera to double his team's lead at 11:11.
Although Norfolk had some opportunities late, they couldn't solve McKenna and suffered a 2-0 shutout.
LaBarbera made 25 saves on the 27 shots that he faced, and McKenna denied all of Norfolk's 31 shots. The Admirals went 0-for-7 on the man-advantage tonight, and the Pirates went scoreless on their five power-play attempts.
Next up for the Admirals is a trip to the Ocean State to take on the Providence Bruins for a Sunday matinee. The puck will drop at 3:05 p.m.
Three Stars:
1) POR #56 Mike McKenna (31 saves)
2) POR #17 Jordan Martinook (2 A)
3) POR #24 Brendan Shinnimin (1 G)
