Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers fired 39 shots at Nicklas Treutle, but he stopped 38 of them, resulting in a 3-1 victory for the Springfield Falcons on Sunday night at Webster Bank Arena.
The loss ended the Sound Tigers' point streak at three games despite their 39-21 advantage in shots. Alan Quine notched the lone goal while Stephon Williams made 18 saves.
2015 Islanders 4th round draft pick Parker Wotherspoon made his professional debut and is the youngest Sound Tiger to play a game in franchise history. Wotherspoon recorded one shot on goal and played about 25 shifts for Bridgeport.
A power play opportunity occurred early on when Daniel New was sent to the box for tripping at 56 seconds. The first Bridgeport shot of the game occurred on the power play when Jesse Graham took a slap shot from the blue line at 2:15 that Nicklas Treutle saved with his pad.
The scoring began when directly off the faceoff former Sound Tiger Dylan Reese sent a backhander towards Stephon Williams, which was saved. The puck stayed loose and Tyler Currier got his stick behind Williams and deflected the puck in glove side at 10:56 for the 1-0 lead. This was Currier's first AHL goal and point in his league debut. Last season, he played 14 games for the Missouri Mavericks, Bridgeport's current ECHL affiliate.
The Falcons chances kept coming with a close call less than five minutes into the second frame when Daniel New drove a slap shot from the point and Williams made a sprawling save to keep the game within one.
The lone penalty of the second occurred with 59 seconds remaining in the frame when Dakota Mermis was sent to the box for holding. The Sound Tigers took advantage of the opportunity with multiple close calls. With just 11 seconds remaining in the period, Alan Quine drove a shot to the net on the power play that was extremely close, but saved by Treutle.
Four seconds after the penalty expired, Quine was rewarded with a wrister that went top-shelf at 1:06 of the third period with help from James Wright and Matt Finn for the tying goal. This was Quine's 19th goal in 54 games and keeps him second on the team points with 48.
Midway through the third, Currier sent a cross-ice pass to Jordan Szwarz who then found a partially open net and drove one home stick side for the 2-1 lead. Szwarz has ten goals in 46 games this season with the Falcons. He also notched a goal with the Arizona Coyotes earlier in the season.
Currier wanted to secure the Gordie Howe hat trick in his first game, so he got into a tussle with Scott Mayfield, both only received roughing minors at 9:15. Mayfield was awarded an extra two minutes for boarding as well. The penalty kill ended with no goals.
After pulling Williams, Szwarz took the puck and drove it to the empty net from the opposite zone.
No further scoring occurred and Bridgeport fell 3-1.
The Sound Tigers look to bounce back on Friday April 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Giant Center against the Hershey Bears.
